WRITING TASK 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
In the past, people ate local food in season. Now it is possible to have any kind of food from all over the world at any time of the year.
Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.
Nowadays, people’s plates are piled high with plentiful and nutritious ingredients, many of which are shipped from other regions. Despite the increased carbon emission generated due to the long-distance trip, I believe the benefits of importing foods are more significant.
The primary positive impact of this practice is that people can enjoy a more diversified diet instead of limited local food choices all year round. For instance, people in winter no longer fret about the lack of vegetables and fruits that cannot be grown in cold weather as most of them can be shipped from warmer areas. This continuous provision of essential nutrition and the excitement of having various off-season food can be conducive to both physical and mental well-being. Additionally, the cross-border food transport also contributes to economic progress. The global trade actually facilitates many countries’ economy, especially those heavily dependent on agricultural industries, since they can export the produce to an expanded market with bulk orders. This creates increased foreign incomes and more job opportunities for local people, two crucial factors in a nation’s prosperity.
On the other hand, it is true that environmental consequences arise from shipping food across the world. It is a common notion that compared with the distribution of domestically grown equivalents, the long-distance travel of foods involves greater consumption of fossils fuels and in turn a larger carbon footprint, which inevitably aggravates the already severe global warming problem. However, transport miles are just one component of environmental costs and the fact is importing foods can be more environmentally friendly for some countries like Canada and the UK due to their absence of suitable climate. Otherwise, they have to use heated plastic greenhouses for vegetables that are grown in hot climates, which requires more energy and generate amounts of plastic pollution, another two major environmental hazards.
In conclusion, since the environmental expense cannot be measured by considering carbon emission only, I believe there are more advantages to increasing the availability of food shipped from other countries, both for consumers’ life and nations’ development.
