Religions and customs vary considerably from culture to culture. They are rich in content and brilliant and colorful in their many forms. But, should one adopt the local customs when subject to an alien culture and custom? This seemingly simple question is rather vexing in that its answer depends to a large extent on a variety of contributing factors. Among these factors, the patterns and nature of the host culture plays a dominant role.
Cultures are generally classified into two categories: folk culture and public culture. The former refers to a culture that emphasizes personal relationships in settling affairs. In such a culture laws are eclipsed by custom and morals, which are the primary modes maintaining the social order. People emphasize codes of social conduct and pay meticulous attention to customs. Any break of decorum is considered as unacceptable as regicidal behaviour or committing a felony. Thus when a visitor is in such a culture, it would be better for her to"do as Romans do. "So in folk cultures, to adopt the local custom is a way for an alien to assimilate or at least the prerequisite to fitting in.
The term"public culture"denotes a society whose social order is maintained first and foremost by legal instruments, and the role of custom, while still evident, is subordinate. While customs in such a culture may evolve at a more rapid pace than in"folk cultures,"still they develop over a relatively long time. Within as short a period as a few decades, some customs may even have"gone with the wind". People generally are more likely to accept different ways of doing things or thinking. Each individual is highly respected. Under such circumstances, it is usually unnecessary for a visitor to calculatedly follow the natives' customs. Even if the newcomer maintains all of her own customs when exposed to an entirely different custom, it is safe for her to do whatever she wants provided it is legal.
Put it simply, in a public culture it is unnecessary to adopt the indigenous customs. But in a folk culture, things are totally different. To follow the local custom is a must.
