In many towns and cities, museums and historical sites are popular places to go and learn about history, culture and art. However, the majority of these facilities are visited by tourists, rather than locals. This essay will discuss why this might be, and consider what can done to encourage local people to visit.
For many tourists, learning about the history of a new place is exciting and informative. They make plans, save money and book tickets months in advance for these visits. On the other hand, for locals, a sense of complacency can reduce any real urgency to visit. Therefore, locals tend not to attend, as they know these sites will be there for many years. Moreover, tourists are on holiday, so have the time and resources to spend travelling and attending exhibitions. Conversely, locals have their normal day-to-day responsibilities to attend to, and may find that they do not have the time to sight-see, or that these sites are not open at times that suit them.
One important way to encourage locals to visit is to bring in temporary exhibitions and displays from other parts of the country, and indeed the world. This way, locals will attend as they know these exhibits will not remain there, and they also get to experience different cultures and art. Curators and managers could also create events around these exhibits, like fairs, talks and markets, as another way to encourage locals to attend. Additionally, these sites should consider opening for longer hours, so that locals are able to attend outside of working hours. One museum in the UK found their visitor numbers went up 25% just by opening for two hours longer on Friday evenings.
It is important that museums and historical sites remain open, and we can only their viability by encouraging visitors, both tourists and locals alike.
